UZ 62 Guideline Green Meetings & Events
The “Austrian Ecolabel” was created in 1990 on the initiative of the Ministry of the Environment. This informs the public about the environmental effects of products and services. Consumers are made aware of environmentally friendly alternatives.
The Austrian Ecolabel is a guarantee for the low environmental impact of the awarded products and services, combined with high quality. In addition, where possible and appropriate, criteria from the other pillars of sustainability (social and economic criteria) are also included in the design of the guidelines. Products, tourism services as well as schools and educational institutions are awarded. Austria was already a pioneer of the national eco-label systems with several initiatives. In 1996, the guidelines for awarding the Austrian Ecolabel to tourism businesses were published for the first time. A new approach was also taken with the guideline for travel offers, in which the requirements go far beyond the quality of the accommodation.
The Ecolabel Guideline 62 “Green Meetings and Green Events” fits logically into this system of guidelines, with which Austria is once again taking on a pioneering role. This guideline places both environmental and social requirements on the organizing company itself and all aspects of an event. Events are often very much in the public eye and should therefore assume responsibility in all areas of sustainability.
